21-Day Equity Challenge

21-Day Equity Challenge

Last September, the City Council and the Tumwater School Board agreed to work together to help address issues of race, racial injustice, diversity, and inclusion in our community. In addition to supporting our organizations, they recognized that as community leaders, they can help the broader community learn and grow, increasing our capacities to be a better, fairer, more welcoming, and safer community. The Council and the School Board are planning to use the 21-Day Racial Equity Challenge, created by the Michigan League for Public Policy, as a framework to continue this work. The challenge is designed to be a manageable way to promote individual and group learning about race and diversity in our community. Staff members from Puget Sound ESD’s Equity in Education Department have agreed to facilitate this collaborative journey.

The District and Council have committed to five joint virtual meetings on the first Thursdays of each month beginning October 7. The facilitators will take the elected officials through discussions and shared learning about the content of the challenge blocks, 4-5 days at a time.

Below is a link to the Challenge. We are using the link from Sumner School District because our facilitators are following that model (and Michigan is updating their webpage, so it isn't currently available).

The intent of this challenge is to encourage two types of learning. One is your own individual learning based on what you watch and read. The other is group learning that comes from listening to others, hearing their perspective, and having your own assumptions or perspective challenged.

Please feel free to join us.
