Math - Curriculum Guides
In Tumwater School District, we bring enthusiasm to mathematical problem-solving and critical thinking. We want students to develop the habits of mind that mathematics is a powerful tool to be used to solve many different problems.
All students in grades K-12 work to make sense and reason about of mathematics.
In every math class, students demonstrate understanding of these eight mathematical practice standards:
- Make sense of problems and persevere in solving them.
- Reason abstractly and quantitatively.
- Construct viable arguments and critique the reasoning of others.
- Model with mathematics.
- Use appropriate tools strategically.
- Attend to precision.
- Look for and make use of structure.
- Look for and express regularity in repeated reasoning.
These standards run as a thread throughout math instruction K-12. In addition, the development of geometric spatial sense is infused through all grade levels, K-12.
In grades K-2, students develop understanding of whole number relationships and place value, including grouping in tens and ones. Students in these levels also develop understanding of addition and subtraction by using place value and the properties of operations.
In grades 3-5, students develop an understanding of multiplication and division by using place value and the properties of operations. Building on their previous work with whole numbers, students apply their understanding to fractions and decimals.
Students in grades 6-8 develop an understanding of ratio and proportionality to solve a wide variety of problems. They extend operations to all rational numbers. They use the arithmetic of rational numbers as they formulate expressions and equations to solve problems.
At the high school level, math instruction branches out into a variety of conceptual categories: algebra, geometry, functions, modeling with math, statistics and probability. In each of these diverse topics, students continue to demonstrate their understanding through the mathematical practices.
