• TVA Communications for the Weekend

Posted by Heather Alnes on 6/11/2021

    Hello TVA Families,

It is hard to believe that we are already in the last month of school! The end of the school year is approaching quickly and we wanted to get you some information about the last days of school. Much of this information has already been sent, but we wanted you to see it again.

    Kindergarten - 5th Grade

The last day of work on the K12 platform will be June 16. Since this is a few days before the end of the year, we will be adjusting the expected progress to reflect that timeline. Students will receive extension activities to work on  during the days of June 17 & 18. On the final day of school (June 21) we will have a year-end drive-through celebration at Michael T. Simmons Elementary in the afternoon. Elementary students must also return their Chromebooks that day, unless they know that they will be returning to TVA in the fall. We will send more information about this event next week.

    Returning Materials

One Big question people have been asking;  What materials do I send back?  The simplest way to think about this; Anything that can be reused…  You will send back (a hardcover book, a microscope, a material not used in a science experiment, etc...)  At the end of the courses (after June 21), K12 will send a Prepaid Mailing label.  You could keep the box that materials were sent in, or you could find a box that fits the equipment at the end of the semester or year.

Here is how to know what should be sent back:  On your Learning Coach page go to your Dashboard and 1) Click on the “my info” section.  From here, 2) click on the Student’s name you want to check an order for and then 3) you can select “orders”… From here, you will see shipping lists with the below key for each item:

    6th - 12th Grade

    8th Grade Celebration

On the final day of school (June 21) we will have a year-end graduation celebration at Michael T. Simmons Elementary in the afternoon. All 8th grade students must also return their Chromebooks that day, you will get new Chromebooks as 9th graders. We will send more information about this event next week.

    6th - 11th Grade

The last day of work on the K12 platform for IST courses (non-TSD teachers) will be June 10. Since IST courses are ending early, the final exams in these courses will be optional. The last day of work on the K12 platform in all other courses will be June 16. Students will have extension activities and Naviance assignments that they will work on during the days of June 17, 18, and 21. All secondary students can keep their Chromebooks for next year as long as they are still enrolled in the Tumwater School District.

  • Youth Bike Challenge

Posted by Heather Alnes on 5/4/2021

We want to encourage youth to stay active and healthy this May with the Youth Bike Challenge!

In May, Walk N Roll usually helps schools celebrate National Bike to School Day and Bike Month by organizing the School Bike Challenge in partnership with the Bicycle Commuter Challenge. This year they decided to do things a little differently. To include more youth throughout Thurston County, they are replacing these events with the first ever Youth Bike Challenge! This is a great way to encourage youth to get outside and stay active while practicing bicycle safety skills.

All Thurston County youth can participate by riding their bike 10 days during the month of May. Participants record the miles they ride each day, then email their completed challenge to walknroll@intercitytransit.com. They will mail all participants a small prize.

See attached flyer and fillable form for more information!

  • HIV & Human Growth Instruction for 5th Grade

Posted by Heather Alnes on 4/23/2021
    5th grade TVA families;

We hope your April is going well, we can’t believe how fast the spring feels like it is going.  5th graders in TSD each year have HIV and Human Growth teaching as part of their curriculum.  Washington State law requires annual HIV education starting in 5th grade as well as sexual health education.  Parents have the ability to preview curriculum (in all WA districts) and can either opt in or opt out for their student.

Mrs. Michel has worked to create a well-organized, paired down and simple virtual version of the curriculum some of our local schools have used over the years.  Part of the State law requires that we allow notice at least one month in advance for parents to preview the curriculum.  TVA is set up a little differently than our neighborhood schools in that you as the learning coach (if you choose to opt in to the curriculum for your student) will be going over this unit with your child(ren).

Please take a moment to preview the attached curriculum.  If you decide you’d like to opt out, please use this OPT OUT form to let us know that you are choosing to NOT complete this unit.  This unit can be completed any time from now until the end of the school year; we would suggest adding this to the las week of May as a part of the Science Work for the week.  The curriculum utilizes a few well thought out videos, diagrams and web content from our FLASH curriculum as well as Kahn Academy.  Mrs. Michel has set up a few different choices for pathways and has provided student learning goals as well as options for a journal assignment/conversation starter for students.

View the Curriculum here:  Human Growth & Development / HIV ed.
If you choose to opt out; use the OPT Out form here:  OPT OUT FORM H.G. & HIV

Please reach out to either myself or Mrs. Michel if you have questions, thank you!

    TVA Families,

The Online Platforms through K12 will be unavailable this Saturday, March 20 for planned maintenance. If users attempt to access the Online Schools or TotalView on Saturday, they will see a maintenance notice.

PLEASE NOTE - MOST IMPACTFUL TO OUR STUDENTS: All school work in progress should be completed before this maintenance window starts. This means that if a student is in the middle of an assessment, they will want to complete it before the outage.
