SPECIAL DIETARY NEEDS
The Food Service Department puts children first by meeting the special dietary needs of our special needs students. Working together with parents, school nurses, and other student support staff we can help create a plan to meet special dietary needs.
Meal Modifications - Special Dietary Needs
Menu modifications will be made for students according to federal law and USDA regulations. These regulations require school meal programs to make reasonable modifications to accommodate children with disabilities. Under the law, a disability is an impairment that substantially limits a major life activity or bodily function. Requests must be medically necessary and are made on a case-by-case basis. This can include allergies and digestive conditions. Personal dietary preferences do not meet the criteria for menu modifications.
Special dietary accommodations are valid for the duration of enrollment. If your student’s medical or health needs change, an updated request for meal modification must be submitted. If your student no longer requires a special diet, documentation from the student’s health care provider must be provided for Food Services to release restrictions.
The necessary form is accessible via the Tumwater School District’s website, located within the Food Services section under departments.
For those with milk sensitivities, a lactose-free milk alternative is available without the need for a medical note. Should you have any inquiries or concerns about dietary accommodations, please reach out to Bob Gibson, Supervisor of Food Services, at (360) 709-7743.
