5th Grade Beginning Band and Orchestra
Welcome to the 2023-2024 school year! Every 5th grade student in the Tumwater School District has the opportunity to enroll in band or orchestra and we would like to take this opportunity to tell you about this exciting opportunity for your child. Band and orchestra are offered beginning in the 5th grade as an enrichment subject that teaches life-long skills and fosters creativity and self-expression. Music is for everyone and we are committed to ensuring that every child has a positive, fulfilling experience.
In order to take advantage of this enrichment opportunity, you only need three things: an instrument, a music stand, and an instruction book. For your convenience, Ted Brown Music will deliver pre-ordered instruments to each elementary school by Tuesday, September 26 so that students may rent an instrument and get their instruction book. Orders must be placed in advance on their website: https://tedbrownmusic.com/topic/schools-tumwater-school-district . Of course, you may alternately decide to rent an instrument from any local music store. Here are a few local stores to consider:
- R.L. Ray Violin Shop (they have all string instruments, not just violins!)
- Music & Arts
- Music 6000
- Ted Brown Music
Please contact your student’s teacher if you need help acquiring an instrument for class. We have several school instruments available for families who may need financial assistance. Every student who wants to participate in band/orchestra can! (check with your music teacher for specific times/links) and even if you don’t have your instrument yet, we’d love for you to come to class so we can meet you.
If you have any questions please contact:

Where Can I Rent an Instrument?
The Tumwater School District has a limited number of instruments for students who cannot afford to rent, however most students generally choose to rent an instrument from a local music store. Any music store will have the materials you need, but we also partner with Ted Brown Music to make it easier for families. They have a rental delivery to the schools by Tuesday, September 26. You can learn more at their website and even rent online for quick pick-up.
