• Section 504 Program

Section 504 is legislation that protects the civil constitutional rights of students with disabilities.  It prohibits schools that receive federal funds from discriminating against students on the sole basis of a disability.  Section 504 is enforced by The Office of Civil Rights. Section 504 requires that school districts insure provision of the full range of special accommodations and services necessary for students with special needs to participate in and benefit from public education programs and activities. 504 regulations require identification, evaluation, provision of appropriate services and procedural safeguards in all public schools.

Tumwater School District provides accommodations to students requiring a 504 plan. Such accommodations/services are determined by a group of persons knowledgeable about the student. Each school has a 504 coordinator who is the point of contact for questions about the 504 program.
