Call To Order: Justine Schmidt called the meeting to order at 6:00 pm
Welcome: Introduction of attendees and officers. Officers included: Heather York – President; Justine Schmidt – Vice President; Tara Clemmens – Secretary/Treasurer; Nancy Manley – Secretary.
Approval of Minutes: The minutes of April 21, 2016 were approved as written.
Treasurer’s Report: Tara Clemmens distributed the BMS PIE Transaction Report and the Monthly Treasurer’s Report to the group. Tara reviewed the income and expenses for the year to date. The Treasurer’s Report was approved and presented.
Principal’s Report: Linda O’Shaughnessy is working on data report to reflect progress Bush Middle School is making academically. There will be upcoming testing 5/25/16 and 6/8/16. There are only 20 school days and the staff is “pressing on to finish well.” Staff is on alert to monitor student dress code as the weather gets warmer. Upcoming events include: June 7th zoo trip reward activity for 7th grade; June 14th Field Day and Math Carnival; Web Leader orientation; 8th grade Wild Waves reward activity; June 13th is 8th grade transition day; June 15th assembly; 8th grade farewell assembly; June 16th half day. August 29th will be the Web Leader training in the commons.
Heather Siminski presented a plan to help parents access technology at Bush Middle School. She would like to set up parent training classes in October to make technology easily accessible. She would like to create a program that helps parents access Skyward, student homework, current grades, emailing teachers, Google Docs, and other technology issues. Other ideas included training nights to plan intervention strategies, preparing for 8th grade, including Web Leaders, including Renaissance Leadership class members. Once a date has been selected advertising will be through Open House, PIE, Bush web site, auto dialers, Skyward alerts, and a mailer.
The Science Fair will be June 2nd. The students will work all day May 31st to complete their presentation boards. Judges are still needed for June 1st.
Deborah Leuchen is requesting $112 for prizes for the Math Carnival.
After discussion about teacher appreciation for the end-of-year it was decided that Heather York would bring in a sandwich wrap lunch for teachers on June 10th. She will check out prices and spend approximately $150 for the lunch.
Heather York will not be continuing as President for PIE. Heather York nominated Justine Schmidt for President and Tara Clemmons second the motion and it was approved. Tara Clemmons will continue as treasurer and Nancy Manley will continue as secretary. The Vice President position is still open as well as volunteer coordinator position openings.
Heather York brought information on summer programs students and parents might be interested. WSU is offering a reading program, Cities of Olympia, Tumwater and Lacey have summer programs, and New Market is offering summer classes.
