East Olympia Elementary

A message from our Principal:

Welcome East Olympia Elementary Families!

I look forward to the start of the 2011-2012 school year. Last year we embraced a new math curriculum and after having used it for a year we have a better idea of how the program introduces concepts, builds on each concept and later connects multiple concepts. This program encourages students to explore, test and justify their reasoning in increasingly complex math concepts.

This year our early release day has shifted from Wednesday to Friday. Feedback from parents was the catalyst for this change and it gives families an early start to the weekend. Teachers and staff will use the time to work with student assessment data to plan the appropriate instruction to meet the needs of our students. The

assessments are only as good as what we do with them. If we can identify what your child has not yet learned, and outline a plan to meet those needs, we all win.

We have very few staffing changes this year. Mrs. Ames has moved from 4th to 5th grade and Mrs. Stone has changed from 5th to 6th grade. Our music teacher, Mrs. Joyner has accepted a full time position in the Mary M. Knight School District. We are in the process of looking at existing district music staff to see how we might best use the talents of our team to meet the musical needs of the students at East Olympia.

We will be sharing more information about the Positive Behavior Intervention and Support program that we will be starting this year. We are looking forward to hav-ing a school wide system that teaches the behavior expectations and rewards good choices.

We look forward to seeing all of you at our Open House on September 6th from 4:00 to 5:30.

Sincerely,

Patricia Kilmer, Principal
